Despite early psychological profiles indicating an unusually introverted personality, earned shuttle pilot certification in freshman year, and earned starship pilot certification during midshipman cruise aboard U.S.S. Exeter, 2261.
Served as student instructor of ancient Telurian language during senior year at the Academy, 2261-62.
After academy, posted to the U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701) as an ensign in 2262. Promoted to junior lieutenant in 2265 and assigned to bridge duty as a junior navigator in 2266. Despite lack of experience and some minor mishaps during bridge service, was instrumental in making first contact with Balok, commander of Starship Fesarius of the First Federation.
On orders of Captain Kirk, was left aboard the Fesarius as a special cultural envoy to continue learning about First Federation culture and technology.
